Hey, I’m Chloe. Welcome back to Meat & Melt, where comfort food meets easy technique and the kitchen always feels a little warmer when something hearty is cooking. Today we’re taking one of my longtime favorites, classic beer brats, and giving them a modern twist using one of my most-used appliances. This is my complete guide to Beer Brats in the Air Fryer.

Why You’ll Love Making Beer Brats in the Air Fryer

  • Quick cooking: The air fryer cooks the brats evenly and quickly, making this one of the fastest ways to get dinner ready.
  • No grill required: Perfect for cold weather days, apartments, or moments when you don’t feel like dealing with charcoal or propane.
  • Beautiful browning: The circulating heat in the air fryer gives you that browned, slightly blistered finish you usually only get over a flame or hot skillet.
  • Beer infused flavor: A brief simmer in beer helps the brats stay juicy and adds savory depth.
  • Easy cleanup: One skillet, one air fryer basket, and dinner is done.

This method is simple, fast, and delivers the cozy, satisfying flavor we love on Meat & Melt.

Ingredients for Beer Brats in Air Fryer

  • Bratwurst: Look for raw bratwurst with natural casings. They brown beautifully and stay juicy with this method.
  • Beer: A lager or amber beer works well. The light malty flavor pairs with the onions and adds richness.
  • Butter: Butter helps soften the onions and gives the beer mixture a velvety texture.
  • Onion: Yellow or sweet onions soften into a flavorful base that complements the bratwurst.
  • Buns: Choose soft buns or pretzel rolls that can hold up to the juicy brats.
  • Optional toppings: Mustard, sauerkraut, caramelized onions, pickles, or even a cheese sauce all make great additions.

For precise amounts, check the recipe card at the end of the post.

How to Make Beer Brats in the Air Fryer

Step 1: Simmer the Brats in Beer

In a skillet or saucepan, pour in the beer and add the butter and sliced onions. Bring to a gentle simmer. Add the brats and cook for 8 to 10 minutes. This step seasons the brats and helps them stay juicy.

Step 2: Preheat the Air Fryer

Set your air fryer to 400 degrees. Preheating helps the brats crisp right away rather than steam.

Step 3: Air Fry the Brats

Remove the brats from the beer bath and place them in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes, turning halfway through, until browned and slightly crisp on the outside.

Step 4: Toast the Buns

If you like toasted buns, place them in the air fryer for about 1 to 2 minutes after the brats are done cooking.

Step 5: Serve

Serve each brat on a bun with the beer simmered onions and your favorite toppings.

Tips for Success

  • Give the brats space: Avoid crowding the air fryer basket. They will brown more evenly with room around them.
  • Simmer gently: Bring the beer to a gentle simmer, not a boil. This keeps the brats tender.
  • Watch the air fryer time: Different air fryers cook at slightly different speeds. Start checking around the 8 minute mark.
  • Try different beers: Lagers keep things light, while amber ales deepen the flavor.
  • Add vegetables if you like: Peppers or sliced onions can go right into the air fryer with the brats for an extra side.

What to Serve With Beer Brats in the Air Fryer

Beer brats work with many classic comfort food sides. Try:

  • Potato salad
  • Creamy coleslaw
  • Baked beans
  • Roasted or air fried potatoes
  • Macaroni salad
  • Buttered noodles
  • A simple green salad

For a cozy dinner, serve the brats over mashed potatoes with the beer onions spooned over the top.

Topping Ideas

Build a topping bar and let everyone dress their brat the way they like. Some favorites:

  • Stone ground mustard
  • Sauerkraut
  • Caramelized onions
  • Pickled jalapenos
  • Relish
  • Sliced pickles
  • Shredded cheese

The toppings bring personality and make the meal feel fun and flexible.

FAQ

Can I use non alcoholic beer?

Yes. Non alcoholic beer works well and still adds flavor.

Can I skip the beer simmer?

You can, but simmering helps the brats stay juicy and well seasoned.

How long do leftover brats last?

Store them in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat in the air fryer for 3 to 4 minutes at 350 degrees.

Can I cook raw brats in the air fryer without simmering?

Yes. They will take about 12 to 14 minutes at 370 degrees, turning halfway. Simmering simply adds more flavor.

Description

Hey, I’m Chloe. Welcome back to Meat & Melt, where comfort food meets easy technique and the kitchen always feels warmer when something hearty is cooking. These Beer Brats in the Air Fryer combine a quick beer simmer for juicy, flavorful brats with a crisp air fryer finish that delivers golden texture and weeknight friendly convenience.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 5 bratwurst
  • 1 bottle beer, 12 ounces
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • Buns for serving
  • Optional toppings such as mustard
  • Optional toppings such as sauerkraut
  • Optional toppings such as caramelized onions

Instructions

  1. In a skillet, combine the beer, butter, and sliced onions and bring to a gentle simmer.
  2. Add the bratwurst and cook for 8 to 10 minutes until partially cooked and infused with flavor.
  3. Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees.
  4. Transfer the brats to the air fryer basket in a single layer and cook for 8 to 10 minutes, turning once, until browned and crisp on the outside.
  5. Toast the buns in the air fryer for 1 to 2 minutes if desired.
  6. Serve the brats hot with the beer cooked onions and your preferred toppings.

Notes

You can replace beer with broth for a non alcoholic version. Avoid boiling during the simmer to keep the brats tender. Air fryers vary in speed so begin checking early for doneness. Leftovers reheat well in the air fryer and make great sandwiches the next day.
