Description

A ridiculously easy and cozy Salisbury Steak Casserole with juicy ground beef, mushrooms, savory gravy, and creamy mashed potatoes baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Scale
  • pounds lean ground beef
  • Salt & black pepper, to taste
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (plus 2 more for topping)
  • ½ cup diced onion (about half a medium onion)
  • 8 ounces sliced mushrooms
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic (about 2 cloves)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1½ cups beef broth
  • 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 4 cups mashed potatoes (store-bought or homemade)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into cubes (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grab a large, oven-safe skillet and set it over medium-high heat.
  2. Brown the beef: Add ground beef, season with salt and pepper, and cook until mostly browned. Scoop the beef out and set aside (it’ll finish cooking in the oven).
  3. Cook the veggies: In the same skillet, melt 3 tablespoons butter. Add diced onion and mushrooms; cook until tender (about 3–4 minutes).
  4. Make the gravy: Add garlic and stir for a minute. Sprinkle in flour, stir to make a paste, then slowly whisk in the beef broth to make a smooth gravy. Let it simmer and thicken.
  5. Combine and flavor: Return the cooked beef to the skillet. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and apple cider vinegar. Remove from heat.
  6. Top and bake: Dollop the mashed potatoes over the beef mixture and spread evenly. Scatter cubed butter on top.
  7. Bake: Pop the skillet in the oven and bake for 15–20 minutes, until the potatoes are golden and the casserole is bubbling.
  8. Serve: Let it rest a few minutes, then dig in while it’s hot and cozy!

Notes

No oven-safe skillet? Transfer to a casserole dish before baking. Add frozen peas or carrots for extra veggie power. For a crispier top, broil at the end for a minute or two.
