- 1 lb lean ground beef (80% lean for juiciness)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 garlic clove, minced (or 1/8 tsp garlic powder)
- 2 slices bread with crust, torn
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 tsp ground mustard
- 1/4 tsp dried sage
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/8 tsp black pepper
- 1/3 cup ketchup (or chili sauce/barbecue sauce)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, combine beef, onion, garlic, bread, milk, egg, Worcestershire, sage, mustard, salt, and pepper. Mix gently.
- Place mixture in an ungreased pan. Form into an 8×4-inch loaf.
- Spread ketchup (or sauce of choice) on top.
- Bake 50–60 minutes until fully cooked. Internal temp should reach 160°F.
- Let stand 5 minutes before slicing.
Notes
Make it ahead and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking. Great for sandwiches or casseroles with leftovers.
