Description

Beer brats on grill are a classic backyard favorite where bratwurst simmer gently in beer and onions before finishing on the grill for smoky flavor and golden browning. Ingredients

  • 3 cans beer, lager preferred
  • 1 large yellow onion, sliced
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 6 bratwurst
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Buns and toppings of choice


Instructions

  1. Place a large pot over medium heat. Add the onions, beer, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, and salt. Bring to a gentle simmer.
  2. Add the brats and cook 10 to 12 minutes until almost cooked through.
  3. Heat your grill to medium and brush the grates with olive oil.
  4. Transfer the brats to the grill. Cook 3 minutes without turning then rotate until browned on all sides and the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees.
  5. Toast the buns on the grill if desired.
  6. Serve the brats topped with the beer soaked onions and your favorite toppings.

Notes

Keep the beer at a gentle simmer not a boil. Raw bratwurst gives the best flavor and texture. Return grilled brats to the beer mixture to stay warm if serving a crowd. Always check that sausages reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees before serving.
